- New Music: Horsebeach - Things To Keep Alive
In 2014 I fell in love with a debut album from Horsebeach, the album was called Alone Together and at the time I threw all sorts of superlatives at it, and suggested that Ryan Kennedy aka Horsebeach was more than worthy of carrying the torch for the great songwriters that have changed the world from the North of England. There was something undeniably Northern about the sound of Horsebeach, the melancholy, the beauty in the greyness and the poetic lyrics. I remember being obsessed at the time with the lyric "Lying here next to me / Our lips entwined hopelessly" from Dull on the debut. I stood by my word at the time of writing the review, Alone Together is an album that I have returned to a great deal over the last ten years. What I have been guilty of though is not being as obsessed with the albums that followed the debut. There is no logical explanation for this, I listened to them on release and they are all good in their own way but they did not leave the same impression on me as Alone Together. Ten years on from Alone Together Horsebeach has returned with his latest offering Things To Keep Alive which bears the most resemblance to Alone Together, which explains why I have not stopped listening to this beautiful, mesmerising album this week and no doubt will play this album a lot this year and during the years to come. A Friend By The Lake opens the album and from the moment you press play you will fall in deeply in love with the warm, soothing sounds that capture the feeling of being reunited with a long lost friend, or in my case, being reunited with a lost cat this week after nine years apart (true story for another day). The drum machine, the chiming guitars, the dreamy vocals all combine to give this album an opening song that will capture the hearts and imaginations of listeners all over the world. In The Shadow of Her follows with a wonderful mix of explosive percussion, uplifting guitars, angelic melodies and vocals that deliver every lyric with passion and belief that will leave you holding on firmly to every sound you hear. A Fault of Us completes this hat trick of songs that have opened the album and will transport everyone within earshot to an alternative world. A world full of endless possibilities, a world full of dreams that feel within reach, dreams that never end, a world full of peace and love. You may feel I am being over romantic here but music can do all of that and more which is why I give so much of my time to it. It is about how it makes the listener feel, that connection you have to the songs and I would be surprised if anyone who gives this album the time it deserves does not feel any connection to Things To Keep Alive. In describing the album Ryan talks openly about how this album is a reflection on his own mental health during the period of writing the album. The importance of recognising the things that we need to do to take care of ourselves and look after our mental health. All that and more is captured in the title song. I am sure there will be many of us out there that will relate to the lyric "I find something in caring for the things that comfort me". If it's pop music that you like (which is what we all like if we are being honest with ourselves) there is plenty of perfect pop music to be found in Things To Keep Alive. Let Me Stay Tonight is full of laid back summery vibes with keyboards driving this song and taking the listener on a beautiful journey along the coast with nothing but blue skies and sunshine guiding the way. Until You continues in a very similar way, the keyboards and percussion give the song a very uplifting radio friendly sound, yes I know the likelihood of this song getting airtime is very slim but that is not the song's fault, this is a fantastic pop song that should be played on as many radio stations as possible. The lyrics give hope and show that no matter how down you may feel comfort can be found if you surround yourself with the right people "I was buried underground / until you came as well / the dirt aside / you have freed me from the thought that suffocating me / and I know / i'm going to work it out". Cinnamon Challenge is a deeply personal and honest song about the struggles in life, how hard it can feel to step outside and not feel like you fit in, "And I don't like / The way it feels / When I step outside and I don't fit my skin" yet despite this it is important to carry on, important to care about yourself and you can overcome the challenges that life throws at you. All of this is crafted with some fantastic guitar riffs, melodies and hooks that will take the listener on every winding path the song throws at you. Surprisingly, well it came as a surprise to me when first hearing the album on my morning run, the album gives us a cover of Pure Shores from All Saints which unbelievably is 24 years old. I don't think anyone can deny the greatness of Pure Shores as a pop song and Horsebeach has now lovingly put this song back on our radar. This version does not venture far from the original, when a song is this great you can't blame Horsebeach for just recreating the wonder of this pop classic. Colourless follows with guitars and vocals that will make the grey skies fade and leave you gazing out at the world and seeing nothing but endless blue skies. Tradition closes the album in a way that will further reinforce the argument that, through Horsebeach, Ryan Kennedy has given the world some of the most magical, most life affirming, most endearing pop songs that have come from Manchester. Things To Keep Alive is quite simply an album you can't ignore. It has made me question myself further as to why I have not paid as much attention to the albums that followed Alone Together. The only argument as to why I let them pass me by is down to connection and feeling, I felt such a connection to Alone Together and the others didn't quite hit those ridiculously high standards. I will certainly revisit those albums and give them more time. What I am trying to say and conclude with is how Things To Keep Alive has instantly left a mark on me, has instantly given me a connection to the album and if you haven't already done so get yourself a copy now. If you love music which has been written from the heart, music that is Northern to its core then this is the album you need in your life right now.

- New Music: Yard Act - Where's My Utopia?
Since forming in 2019 Yard Act have achieved an incredible amount of success including a number 2 album for The Overload, their debut release which also received a Mercury Prize nomination. The band have also collaborated with Elton John, played The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and festival slots worldwide including SXSW and Coachella. When you stop and think about how their lives have changed, the direction that The Overload set them, they have not for one minute let any of this go to their heads. Yard Act always come across as very grounded and appreciative for what they have in life. The most striking thing about this band and song writer James Smith is how he writes about the world that he knows. The Overload is a social commentary of the time, this album arrived after lockdown and paints an accurate picture of post-Brexit Britain. The Overload was very observational and introduced us to a number of characters, with Where's My Utopia? James has written very much from his own perspective. Where's My Utopia? comes across from the angle of trying to deal with the fame that has come the band's way, balancing the joys of being in a band, seeing the world and what that brings together with the complexities of family life and being apart from loved ones. Becoming a parent and the hopes and fears that parenthood can bring. The first song that I would like to try and talk about on this inspiring album is Blackpool Illuminations which comes towards the end of the album but is arguably the album's centrepiece. This song sees James going on a journey through his childhood and how that journey has taken him to the same place but now as a parent, seeing his own son walking in the same footsteps as James once took as a child. This is a song that should be studied in universities. It is raw, honest, emotional and contains moments that all of us will relate to. Some of those moments include that feeling as a child when you really hurt yourself. James talks about falling in a hotel room and splitting his lips, blood pouring out of his gums. It's the way he recounts the pain in these lyrics that took me back to a time in my childhood where I went over the handlebars of my bike and scraped my chin along the pavement. There is nothing like that pain of falling in childhood and how it stays with you forever. The lyrics about how you feel towards your parents as a child are so true and beautiful "I think at that age / You feel most in love with your parents / I think they're your best friends / And they're your whole world / And they keep you safe and you know them better than anyone else / And when they're happy together with you / The fact that you never want life to change" . Blackpool Illuminations sees James declaring his love for his son, for his family and how these are the greatest achievements in his life, and again is something I certainly relate to. I often say to people that my daughter is my greatest achievement in life, so I am not ashamed to admit that I shed a tear when I heard the lyric "Finally I'd made it / And for the first time I felt truly free / With my beautiful family and my dream job no longer a dream / Still now it baffles me / I attained perfection with you / I attained perfection / So why the fuck was I wondering what wankers would think of album 2" Those feelings of family life also feature heavily in The Undertow which sees James reflecting on the challenges of being away from his family, life on the road with a young child at home. Being away getting to see all these places, having fun on stage with friends when you are missing out on home life. "What's the guilt worth if you do nothing with it". This is something that many families have to deal with, it can be a challenge for many trying to support the family financially and being away from home. Guilt is an emotion that will resonate with anyone who has ever had to spend time away from their loved ones, but within this song James is reminding us it is ok to do this, it is ok to be away as hard as it may be but make sure you do something with it. Yard Act have always had a strong element of humour running through their music and that humour certainly takes centre stage in We Make Hits "Post Punks latest poster boys / wouldn't have got to ride / On the coattails of the dead". We Make Hits is a tongue in cheek pop at the music industry but you can't help but get the feeling that this is how Yard Act see themselves at times, they want to be a pop band, they want to achieve success and give the world songs that everyone can sing and dance to "We make hits / Two broke Millennial men". Dream Job sees the band trying to come to terms with their relationship with the music industry and the success that has come their way over the last three years, trying to accept that it is a dream job, they are achieving a level of success they previously dreamt about but what do you do when you get this success, how do you sustain it, how do you keep yourself sane, and look after your mental health. Similar to Blackpool Illuminations, Down By The Stream is another one of those wow moments. It is one of those songs that will have you hanging on every word and feeling deeply every lyric that you hear. This song sees James reflecting on a past life of being a school bully "I was young, but more so I was wrong". James further shows his regret and learning from these moments and approaching this from the perspective of a parent how he would feel if his son acted this way " If I found out my son had been picking on someone / Well, when he came home from school, I'd grab that little fucker by the rucksack / Pin him up to the wall and scream in his face / Until he'd never dare make another person feel shitty at all". As with everything Yard Act do it is the honesty that the listener can truly appreciate in the music. Down By The Stream deals with the cycles of abuse and just because someone did it to you, does not mean it is right to do it to someone else. It is important that we let songs like this provoke us into thinking, to have conversations about actions from our own past where we may have said something to someone that may have had an impact on them, made them feel a certain way and something that has stuck with them throughout their life. James apologises in this song for making someone feel this way. It is important we recognise these feelings, these moments, own them, apologise and make sure we and future generations learn from them. Final song to pick out is When the Laughter Stops featuring Katy J Pearson, another self reflective song about success, how long is it going to last, the pressure of trying to replicate success, what are you going to do when it stops "When the laughter stops". What makes this song stand out so much is the way it makes you want to dance and have fun. The chorus is catchy, the bass will have you hooked, the lyrics are quirky and fun this is a song that will be sure to make you smile. Yard Act have once again proved why they are one of the most important bands in the UK, scrap that, one of the most important bands in the world right now. Where's My Utopia? has taken the band to another level, as songwriters, as musicians and as people in general. I love how with Where's My Utopia? they have recognised that as songwriters it is important to be honest and write about the world that you know. Their first album was of the time, they could not have continued writing about those themes and characters for ever. They have now written about the current chapter in their lives, written about real life experiences, emotions and everything and as fans, as music lovers, that is all we could ever have asked for. What's next for the band, who cares. Enjoy Where's My Utopia?, catch them on tour this year and feel confident in the knowledge that whatever they do next you know Yard Act will not let you down.

- New Music: John Bramwell - The Light Fantastic
John Bramwell is one of the country’s most important song writers, from the early days of I Am Kloot he has spoilt us with melodies, melancholy and songs that find beauty and hope in the mundane aspects of life. He has clearly been influenced by his northern roots, the sky, the stars and life’s endless dreams and possibilities. Yet, having said that it also needs to be acknowledged how under appreciated he is when it comes to mainstream recognition. If you stopped fifty people in the street and asked if they were aware of John Bramwell / I Am Kloot my initial assumption is a large percentage of those people would say no. John is clearly loved by many but it seems unfair that, when you are as naturally talented as John is when it comes to observing life, writing lyrics, and melodies, that does not always translate to album sales and arena sized venues. What is important is John Bramwell always comes across as a man who loves what he does. He was born to write songs and perform. When I Am Kloot came to an end he took it upon himself to phone venues, get himself booked for gigs and has seemed to be constantly touring the country playing these songs to those that love to hear them. Amongst all this touring John has found time to write a new collection of songs, put a band together and give us an album full of new material for the first time in seven years. Highlighting the fact that a band has been put together is important, this is not a solo album. The Light Fantastic is a collection of songs that has been carefully thought out to ensure they sound solid and have that collective togetherness of a band all coming together to give these songs a wonderful lease of life. In interviews recently John has described how writing these songs helped him get through some difficult times in his life including the passing of his parents and the end of a relationship. John has used music as a healing power, how songs can give us hope for better days ahead and remind us to pause and look up at the sky, gaze out at the ocean and remember that life is worth living. If you have experienced those feelings of loss and despair, The Light Fantastic will certainly speak to you. The lyrics will be relatable, and the uplifting melodies will put a smile back on your face and leave you feeling hopeful and having the strength to get through the difficult times. Some of the many highlights on the album include the opening song Leave No Traces which eases us into the record with a lovely acoustic melody that will warm your heart. The lyrics are about escapism, wanting to “drift away on a guided wheel / or a slow train to nowhere / learn how to feel”. If you have ever felt as though you are on the outside looking in at the world the lyrics will speak to you “I’m living on the outside / I love the world so far away / Don’t have to care what people say / Leave no traces” . The point I was making about how this album was recorded as a band is clearly evident in A World Full of Flowers where the harmonies and instrumentation throughout this song reminds us of the importance of friendships and being together with others to create beautiful music. The Light Fantastic is a song full of magic and wonder, that has been perfectly formed through harmonies, arrangements and musicians who love being in each other’s company. Here It Comes is a fascinating song which references ‘corporation penguins’, a line that further strengthens my argument as to why John Bramwell is one of our greatest songwriters. A Sky Full of Thunder and Lightning is full of emotional harmonies, cello playing that will make you fall in love with the instrument (if you weren’t already), lyrics that will make you stop and think “I am lying on a bed of roses / living in a world of supposes / where the only thing that anyone knows is / who not to be”. This lyric captures so much of the time we are living in, where people put a fake version of themselves on social media, and we can lose reality on what is real and what is fake. So many of John’s songs have referenced the sky. Reminding us of how vast the world is and how small we are in terms of what is out there. The never-ending skies, the depth of the oceans, and what could be found in these places. I Am The Sky is another one of those beautiful songs that can be held up amongst John’s best songs. This is a song to lose yourself in, go for a walk through the forest, step outside gaze up at the stars whilst trying to figure out what the world is all about. If that wasn’t enough this song is taken to even greater heights through the cello playing which will make you feel at peace with the world. The Element of Truth is an enthralling song which is full of dramatic moments, whilst managing to weave some pop melodies and hooks ensuring your attention does not drift. I Feel Me will again be relatable to anyone who feels the need to escape, the need to go to a place where you can be yourself, the importance of remembering who you are and don’t try to be anyone else . “Sit in my car and I stare at the ocean / Head for the light and the heat of the city / Head for the hills where the street lights look pretty / And I feel me”. Nobody Left But You is a song of two halves. The first is spoken word over an acoustic guitar, which then builds and transcends with the cello and takes us away to another world with melodic vocals that will leave us ready for whatever challenges the world decides to throw are way. It is such a lovely feeling to have John Bramwell writing new songs again, and to be back with a band. From start to finish The Light Fantastic is such a joyful experience, this is an album to share with friends, an album to provide you with comfort and to remind you that you are not on your own and by letting music into your life the world suddenly seems a better place.

- New Music: Cast - Love Is The Call
If I had to make a list of my top 10 albums of all time which is a task I hope I never have to do as I honestly would find it so hard, All Change, the debut album by Cast, would be very high on that list. All Change is the perfect debut album, it is full of energy, optimism, self-belief and whilst you are listening to the album you feel a better person and believe in better days ahead. I was 17 when that album came out, and when I listen to it now I am taken back to those times. A time where the world was full of endless possibilities, the album brought sunshine and light to every day, we had dreams to chase and less to worry about it. Twenty nine years on from the release of All Change Cast are back with their seventh album Love Is The Call. Please don’t think I am dismissing the other five albums in the bands catalogue by only referencing All Change as they all have some great moments but as an album All Change was the one that meant the most. Also during the press build up to the release of Love Is The Call, John Power has talked openly about debut albums and that it's not just the fact that a band has all the time in the world to make the debut album. What makes a debut album so special is that energy, belief and optimism that a band can bring to their first release. Cast have worked hard to capture those feelings and emotions during the writing and recording of Love Is The Call and it is incredible that a band who have been together for over thirty years, and on their seventh release together have given us an album that feels like a debut release. Bluebird opens the new album and is a song that appears to bridge the gap between John's former band (The La’s) to Cast. This is an acoustic, psychedelic, beautiful little song that is not like anything else on the album but reminds us of how significant John Power has been as a songwriter and the mark he has left on British popular culture. First Smile Ever follows with infectious melodies and insightful lyrics trying to figure out who we are, feeling the world has turned its back on us, trying to escape from the day to day routines “You walk out the door / Each day feels the same”, but then a moment of magic can happen, you can find beauty in the world and “for the first time in forever / you’ve got a smile on your face”. The Rain That Falls manages to sound familiar and new at the same time. There is such an uplifting feel that runs throughout this song reminding us of all the reasons why we fell in love with Cast in the first place. They are a band who quite simply make the world a better place through writing anthemic pop songs. They also have this trick where on the surface it seems they are writing basic pop songs, but they are far from basic, listen out for the key changes especially in The Rain That Falls and you realise this is songwriting genius. Faraway is perfect, in fact it is more than perfect. This is a song that I will never tire of and neither should you. It is one of those songs that was written for that communal experience. Don’t get me wrong I love listening to this song on my headphones and playing it in the house but this song will take on a life of its own in the live arena. Imagine a field full of people, a pub full of friend’s, arms around each other singing aloud and enjoying life. Lyrically it is that perfect combination of reflection and questioning ourselves “I’m running around on empty dreams” then going on to realise that there is hope left in the world and better days lie ahead “You’ve got a smile on your face again”. Love You Like I Do was the first single released from the album and this is a song that could only have been written by Cast it effortlessly skips from verse to chorus, with all band members sounding happy to be together recording music after all these years. Love Is The Call is an infectious song that will have you nodding along and joining in with the chorus. Starry Eyes is another memorable moment. I love the lyrical style that John uses in this song. It is full of attitude and confidence that ensures Starry Eyes is a song that will be impossible to ignore. Lyrically we see John thinking about the modern world and how difficult it can be to escape and switch off these days “It’s getting harder each day to survive”. The drums that open I Have Been Waiting will be sure to get you on your feet, then when the guitars and vocals join the party there will be no excuses for staying still, this song will be sure to get you moving. Look Around adds to the never-ending list of great pop songs to come out of Liverpool. It is full of creativity and imagination especially the part where John goes all Bowie on us with the vocal style, I was not expecting that. Time Is Like A River is a dreamy psychedelic pop song that provides us with a wonderful metaphor for life “Time is like a river / It floats out to the see / reaching on forever / endlessly”. We can’t go back in life, we can’t change things, life is a journey, it is a never-ending river and we have to go with the ebb and flow of the tide. Tomorrow Call My Name closes the album with a big fat slice of positivity, did we expect anything else? It is a call to arms, a rousing pop song which reminds us of the struggles of life “Same old story heard it all before” then leaves us with the message of love and hope that we will survive, we will get over whatever life throws at us “ You know its gonna be alright”. It can’t be a coincidence that the last word on Love Is The Call is alright, which of course links us back nicely to Alright from All Change. This is not the first time John has done this. Looking Glass, the song that closed the seminal album by The La’s had the final lyric “The change is cast”. Do I need to say anymore, John Power is one of life’s greats, he is a genius of a songwriter who cares so much about the songs he has been part of. Cast welcome back, Love Is The Call can rightly be talked about as an album that will make a difference to the lives of so many.
