The soundtrack to the Quadrophenia movie was released in the UK on October 5, 1979 (Polydor 2625 037) and as a CD in the early 1980s (Polydor 519 999-2) and as a remastered and restored CD in 2001 (Polydor 543 611-4). It was released on October 6, 1979 in the US (Polydor PD2-6235) and as a CD (Polydor 314 519 999-2) and remastered and restored CD (Polydor 314 519 691-2) in 2001.
The soundtrack was a double album which included a selection of tracks remixed by John Entwistle from the original double album plus three new Who songs not on the original LP. ‘Zoot Suit’, the original A-side of the sole High Numbers single, is actually the melody of an obscure US soul song, ‘Misery’ by The Dynamics, with new lyrics by Peter Meaden designed to appeal to The Who’s Mod following.
Of the other three songs, ‘Get Out And Stay Out’ was written to accompany the on-screen action, ‘Four Faces’ was an out-take from the original album sessions, featuring Pete on vocals and piano and some of Keith Moon drum track. ‘Joker James’ was originally written circa 1968, Pete’s lyrics to the song having appeared in a US magazine, Eye, that year. Other tracks on the album consisted of music by various 60s artists used in the film. They were deleted from the original CD but have since been restored on the re-issue.
