About the event
Lonely Deckchair is the sound of a musical and emotional journey coming full circle. Sonic landscapes shaped by memory, the insatiable pull of time and place and a lifelong dedication to music finally finding a creative outlet – the kaleidoscopic, sentimental and widescreen vision of an artist who thought his time would never come.
Our story begins, three decades ago, on a beach in the sun-baked southern Spanish town of Aguadulce, a historic coastal resort in the province of Almeria. Amongst the locals stretched out across the sand is a family from North-West England. One son lies, eyes closed, listening to his dad’s ’60scompilation on a portable CD player. Sharing earphones with his older brother, "whimsical, jangly, hippie" music plays in one ear while the sounds of waves, birdsong and the bustle of the beach drift and shift to the other. He enters a dreamlike state in which music and nature merge into one meditative, atmospheric soundscape.
Thus begins a lifelong musical journey whose twists and turns surprise and inspire at every turn. A teenage fixation with The Jesus and Mary Chain and bands like Spacemen3 and My Bloody Valentine leads to the formation of Lovelust, a psych-focused dysfunctional indie band who eventually released a sole, now cult EP, on Oddbox Records.
As the band’s energy fades, the pull of electronic music takes over. Sun-soaked trips to Ibiza and regular visits to A Love From Outer Space parties create a deep passion for slo-mochuggers, trippy dancefloors and Balearic beats, which inspire many DJ adventures in the place he calls home, Stoke-on-Trent.
As time moves on, fatherhood and family life set in. The DJ adventures fade but the yearn to make music still lingers. Nights are dedicated to recording lo-fi sounds in the cellar – sonic sketches, drawn with little more than a guitar, a small selection of synths and a couple of dusty drum machines emerge from his subconscious. These ideas would lay dormant, waiting for the right moment to reappear.
One day, while daydreaming in the makeshift studio of his new home, the name ‘Lonely Deckchair’ surfaces from the corner of his mind. He returns to Aguadulce beach, this time with a family of his own. Triggered by a deep and comforting sense of deja-vu, he starts to collect an archive of Super-8 style footage, photographs and sounds from this nostalgia-stirring place, knowing that one day he would put them to use. While strolling across the beach, he spots a lonely deckchairwith a vintage floral parasol. Stopping to snap it in splendid isolation, a musical vision emerges – one closely tied to time, place and memory.
After returning to the UK, he starts making this vision a reality. Recordings are made at his home studio and grainy visuals created using the Super-8 footage. A close friend hands demos to NuNorthern Soul boss Phil Cooper and within days, these magical sounds have found a home.
Fast forward to the summer of 2026 and Lonely Deckchair’s emotive, sun-soaked and melancholic aural vision– one painted in vivid musical colours, backwards guitars, delay-laden electronics, exotic rhythms and hallucinatory seaside sounds – is finally unleashed on the world via a debut album of rare timeless Balearic beauty. A page has been turned; a new chapter of the Lonely Deckchair story is about to be written...
