James Bower’s Power Hour

Don’t you love that feeling when you hear a song for the first time that has such an impact on you that you can’t stop thinking about it and want to hear it over and over again.  That is exactly what happened to me when I first heard Glow by James Bower’s Power Hour.  I was in the kitchen one Sunday afternoon preparing lunch (yes very rock n roll) listening back to Adam Waltons Saturday night Radio Wales show and a song started to fill my kitchen in such a beautiful and tranquil manner that caused me to stand completely still and focus entirely on the sounds and lyrics I was hearing (lunch was a little late that day). James Bower’s Power Hour are a seven-piece folk band from Cardiff.  We are treated to flute, clarinet, double bass, drums, banjo and singer-songwriter James Bower.  The combination of these instruments and vocals are simply magnificent.  After having the pleasure of listening to two of their songs Glow and a live version of Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way it is obvious to even the most causal of listeners that these are clearly talented musicians who love and believe in what they are doing.

The current single Glow is perfect for these times.  The band describe the song as being about those people who bring joy and meaning when we’re close to giving up.  Even on the darkest night, the love we share brings it light.  This is a song that will resonate with so many of us.  We all need people in our lives who bring us joy, people we know who are always there for us, we might not see these people every day but we know they are there for us when we need them.  “Friends will not be friends forever / But love will never end” This song captures that in such a graceful way.  The instrumentation is so subtle yet incredibly powerful.  The gentle arrangements allow us to focus on the vocals and the life affirming lyrics whilst being taken to a very warm, happy and familiar place through the sounds that we hear. If you have yet to do so please make some time in your life for James Bower’s Power Hour you will instantly feel better for doing so.  If you let them in now you can be one of those smug people who in a few years time when you see this band headlining festivals can proudly say you were with this band from the start.   Head over to the bands website now where you can download Glow together with lyrics sheet that are well worth saving and reading.
